I'm just a ....
I’m just a …..
How many times have I heard myself or others say this?
My sweet 16 babe stepped into the world of work this weekend.
On the way to school this morning she chatted about it, unaware that she was learning and reminding me afresh of great insights into life and community.
It went something like this:
Mum I was washing dishes and I could see that I was part of something bigger. Even though it was ‘dishes’, it needed to happen so that the chef could plate the food the others could serve it and then bring it back to me. Each of us were needed. We each had a super important role. Without one, the whole thing wouldn’t work, we needed each other to make it great.
There is no ‘just’. We need each other. No job or role is any less important, less valuable or less worthwhile than any other.
Whatever you or I are being or doing is crucial to what makes the world around us great.
Every time we say:
“I’m just ….. retired, a mum, a teacher, a student, a book keeper, a waitress, a maker, a worker, a grandparent, a nurse, single….”
We devalue ourselves and our incredibly important part in making the world around us keep going and being amazing.
We need to learn to be kind to ourselves.
So, today, I declare a war on “I’m just….”
When I hear it, I will speak up and say “not just", you are that and you are invaluable and needed.”
We are all a part of something bigger than ourselves. We are all needed. We need each other, no matter what part we play or role we take.
Will you join me in the war on “I’m Just…” and start declaring the truth of our worth, value and importance to the world?
The only ‘just’ you and I are is just amazing, just fabulous and just beautiful – so friends, be kind to you today!
